Rajana 2005: following the codes of Khmer culture to unify under the arts

Seattle, WA--Through the quests and daily endeavors Khmer Americans partake upon, it comes of most significance to remember the days of time's past. Yet, as the generations continue to step forward and the Khmer population expands across the nation, sometimes it is easy, and most likely without true intent, to forget about the spiritual, dominating presence of Khmer arts and entertainment deep within the confines of our lives everyday. Khmer arts bring together folks in search for a common cause, a cause too easily misconstrued and ignored by domineering eyes of the American public and its socially defined media.

Rajana Society is an organization originated at the University of Washington and directly aims to distinguish Khmer arts as the unique, self-defining entity of Khmer Americans at the UW campus, the local Seattle community, and the international community without borders. There are five officers who continue to partake and persevere in maintaining the availability and advancement of passages for others to realize the beauty, enrichment, and extravagance of the Khmer traditions and the arts. Let it be known that Khmer people in this nation and abroad are not entrapped within a box defined by privileged societal norms. We sing, we dance, we write, we direct, and we prosper with the best of them and Rajana Society's aim as a commission is to make this message known to all who will listen and support the common cause to embrace Khmer arts and its entertainment to its fullest degree imaginable.

Savatei Sea is the first female Khmer American to hold the position as President. She is a senior and majors in Biochemistry. Anga Lao serves as Vice President for the Society. She is also a senior and will graduate with a degree in Speech and Hearing Science. Baron B. You join Rajana Society as its new Secretary and will complete a double major in American Ethnic Studies and Biology. Kimhorn Seng, an aspiring photographer who has been an active member with the Society for one year now, will serve as the Historian. Chanvatha Sea is another new addition to the organization and will serve as the Treasurer. She is a sophomore at the UW and pre-major in business marketing. Phatry D. Pan, UW alumni, is the current Ambassador and co-founder of Rajana Society. And we are currently in search of individuals to fill a Webmaster and Public Relations position. Interested candidates feel free to contact Rajana Society at email: rajana@u.washington.edu or phone: 206.312.7367....
